Roussillon

Roussillon is a charming mountain village located in a very scenic area between the two large mountain massifs Plateau de Vaucluse in the north and Montagne de Lubéron in the south. Roussillon is considered one of the most beautiful villages in France and receives a steady stream of holidaymakers every year.

Roussillon is decoratively perched on red rocks surrounded by pine forests. The soil of Roussillon is rich in ochre, which has been mined in neighbouring mines and used for paint, cosmetics and countless other purposes since Roman times. The whole area is dominated by red, yellow and brown rocks. The town is extremely interesting with its many ochre-coloured houses, narrow streets and shady squares. The ochre-coloured houses in Roussillon give the whole town a reddish hue.

The old ochre mines are located east of the city. In the Val des Fées (Valley of the Fairies) to the south are the most breathtaking cliffs; the centre is known as the Falaises de Sang (Blood Cliffs). At the top of the city by the church, Castrum, there is a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.

Activities in Roussillon

There are great opportunities for outdoor activities in the Vaucluse area, see for example the following websites: http://www.provenceguide.com/gbcdt/index.asp; http://www.hautvaucluse.com/pdf/guidea.pdf (Guide to activities and attractions in the Haut Vaucluse area).

Cycling: Challenges for everyone, from elite athletes to families with children. There are several great tours to other towns in the area, a wealth of less demanding mountain routes and the tough Mont Ventoux. Bike hire is available in the town.

Golf - There is a wealth of golf courses in the area, 4 in the department of Vaucluse and several in the neighbouring southern department of Bouhes du Rhône. The French Golf Union has a website where most courses are presented. Unfortunately, the website is in French. Go to Guide de golfs and search here under the Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur region: http://www.ffgolf.org/.
