Bédoin

Bédoin is a charming medieval village located at the foot of the legendary Mont Ventoux in the Vaucluse department, 15 kilometres north of Carpentras. Bédoin is a very quiet town that is not characterised by tourism to any great extent. Here you feel far away from the hustle and bustle of coastal towns. A holiday in Bédoin offers great opportunities for excursions in the very scenic surroundings and many outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, climbing, skiing or golf.

Bédoin boasts one of the largest (6300 ha) and most interesting communal forests in France.

It is arguably the most varied forest in the Vaucluse with more than 1200 different types of vegetation.

Numerous hikes are organised for those who want to experience the fauna and flora of the area. The most remarkable excursion is to watch the sunrise over the top of Mont Ventoux. A brochure describing this particular excursion and other half-day excursions is available from the tourist office.

Bédoin is dominated by the imposing church of Saint Pierre, which is very different in style to anything else in the region. Built in the Mannerist style between 1708 and 1736, Saint Pierre Church was restored in the early 19th century. The church has been designated a monument worthy of preservation.

Bédoin is located in the Côtes du Ventoux wine region and is known for its fine quality wines, fruit and asparagus.

There are great opportunities for outdoor activities in the Vaucluse area, see for example the following websites: http://www.provenceguide.com/gbcdt/index.asp http://www.hautvaucluse.com/pdf/guidea.pdf (Guide to activities and attractions in the Haut Vaucluse area).

Climbing: Climbing is possible 3 kilometres outside Bédoin. Take the D19 in the direction of Malaucène. The access road is opposite the Domaine de la Madelène - from here it is 1 km to the car park. From the car park it is only a few 100 metres to the cliff.

Cycling: Challenges for everyone, from elite athletes to families with children. There are several great rides to other towns in the area, a wealth of less demanding mountain routes and the tough Mont Ventoux.

Golf - There is a wealth of golf courses in the area, 4 in the department of Vaucluse and several in the neighbouring departments of Bouhes du Rhône and Var. The French Golf Union has a website where most courses are presented. Unfortunately, the website is in French.
