Trans-en-ProvenceSouth of Draguignan is the small village of Trans-en-Provence, where the Nartuby River cascades over the cliffs and creates a cascade of waterfalls. Conveniently located in the heart of Provence, Trans-en-Provence is a great base for holidays and excursions in the surrounding area with charming small towns, vineyards and olive groves and up to the great gorges of Gorges du Verdon or along the coast. Trans-en-Provence is a charming little village without any major attractions. Along the riverbank are the old mills and a number of other industrial buildings. The town also has a number of silk factories from the 18th century. In several places the river is crossed by old arched bridges that are still in use. The façade of the Hôtel de Ville has been beautifully restored in Louis XV style. Just on the other side of the lowest bridge is the old olive mill, where you'll also find the Vieux Moulin restaurant. Just outside the city you'll find le puits aérien, a little curiosity that is definitely worth a visit. Belgian inventor and engineer Achille Knapen was convinced that the humidity of the air could be utilised to bring more water to the region. In 1930, he built a dome that was 10 metres high and 15 metres wide. The principle behind the invention was that the warm air would fill the dome during the day and turn into condensation during the cool night hours. Unfortunately, the invention remained at the experimental stage because Achille Knapen died before he could prove its worth.
