Tourtour

The medieval village of Tourtour is located 27 kilometres northwest of Draguignan in the Var department.

Tourtour is an incredibly picturesque and well-restored village that has been voted one of the most beautiful villages in France. Unfortunately, Tourtour is a holiday village that is almost completely extinct in the off-season, but it is definitely worth a visit, not least because of its fantastic location.

Tourtour is known as the village dans le ciel or ‘village in the sky’ and from a distance, Tourtour looks like it's floating above the horizon.

Tourtour is perched at an altitude of 650 metres and offers sumptuous views on all sides. On a clear day you can see the Massif des Maures, France's southernmost mountain range, the Luberon mountains, Ste-Baume and Cézannes Ste-Victoire near Aix-en-Provence.

Tourtour is an incredibly charming village with a wealth of old stone houses, well-restored facades, ancient fountains and gates and flower-filled squares where you can enjoy a coffee in the shade of the plane trees.

In the centre is an imposing 14th-century château with 4 massive round towers, one in each corner, one of which dates back to the 12th century. The castle is incredibly well restored and is still in use. Also in town is an old olive mill from the 17th century and the small Musée des Fossiles, which exhibits dinosaur eggs and fossilised shellfish. On the Rue de lavoir on the outskirts of the town there is a fine old launderette.
