St-Tropez

St-Tropez or St-Trop, as the town is popularly known, is one of the Riviera's top tourist attractions. This unusual resort attracts no less than 100,000 holidaymakers during the high season in August. Provacances offers holiday homes in the nearby seaside resorts of Ste-Maxime, St-Aygulf, Fréjus and Les Issambres as well as in the small medieval village of Grimaud. St-Tropez is located in beautiful and lush surroundings in the stunning Golfe St-Tropez. The coastline of St-Tropez offers fine sandy beaches with all kinds of water sports.

It was the painter Paul Signac (1863-1935) who discovered St-Tropez in 1892, then an insignificant but idyllic fishing village. He was enthralled by the unspoilt idyll of the place, and he both painted and wrote about the wonderful scenes he found. It was through him that we first heard about St-Tropez. In the fifties, the peaceful fishing village was rediscovered by film stars and other celebrities such as Brigitte Bardot and Françoise Sagan, who in the years that followed attracted the rest of the jet set.

The city's main attraction is undoubtedly the old harbour and the harbour quay, Jean-Jaurès, with its old pastel-coloured fishermen's houses. In the harbour basin, you can still see the old fishing boats lying side by side with the huge luxury yachts.

Behind the pavement cafés along the harbour lies the extremely charming old town with narrow, busy streets and cosy squares with small shops and restaurants. Behind Quai Suffren is Place des Lices, a large square filled with cafés where locals play pétanque. The city's 19th-century Baroque church is beautiful with its remarkable yellow tower at the top. Above the town is the impressive 16th-century hexagonal citadel with the Musée Naval de St-Tropez. From here there are breathtaking views over the roofs of the town and the bay below.
