Seillans

Seillans is an idyllic medieval village located in the heart of Provence. It is the oldest of the fortified mountain villages in the Var department and has been named one of the most beautiful villages in France. Seillans is like a nest clinging to the mountainside and from here there are stunning views across the valley towards Lac de St Cassien.

Three city gates lead into the old town, which is steeped in history with beautifully preserved stone houses and fountains, narrow cobbled streets and lovely little squares with fountains shaded by plane trees. At the top is a privately owned castle, which is actually a picturesque collection of buildings dating back to the 11th - 17th centuries.

Seillans has always had a magical attraction for artists. The great German painter Max Ernst settled in Seillans and spent the last twelve years of his life here, enamoured by its beauty and atmosphere. Before him, composer Charles Gounod and journalist and author Alphonse Karr found inspiration here.

Seillans is also one of the few towns in the area that has preserved its perfume production. The factories, located in the hills just outside the town, date back to 1883 and are still going strong.
