Lorgues

Lorgues is a charming medieval Provencal village set in a lush landscape of pine and oak forests, olive groves and vineyards. Lorgues is located in the Var department, between Vidauban and Draguignan and between the Mediterranean Sea and the breathtaking Gorges du Verdon. The town is known for its weekly market, which takes place on Tuesdays and is considered one of the best in the area. The market always attracts many visitors from both near and far.

The colourful market that takes place in the morning is a must-see during your visit to Lorgues, where the town buzzes with life and activity. On other days of the week, the town is quieter, but the local atmosphere always remains lively. A stroll through the city streets is a pleasure and you'll find that despite its relatively small size (around 9,000 inhabitants), Lorgues offers a wonderful selection of bistros and restaurants where locals and visitors alike gather to savour the famous Provençal cuisine.

Most of the town's eateries and shops are located along the main street. But don't forget to head up to the oldest part of Lorgues, where the beautiful labyrinthine streets wind between pastel-coloured buildings. The town has always been important, as evidenced by the remains of the old defence walls from the Middle Ages. If you look carefully, you can also discover fountains, washhouses and the ruins of old mills and chapels in the small alleyways.

You may want to start your adventure at the tourist office where you can get a map of the city's historical sites. For food lovers, Lorgues is a true paradise. There are plenty of opportunities to visit local wineries and taste the amazing wines produced in the region. The area also offers a wealth of activities for the whole family, from horse riding to canoeing in the nearby Gorges du Verdon, Europe's answer to the Grand Canyon. There are also many lovely hiking trails in the area and the tourist office can provide you with maps of these.

If you fancy a day at the beach, the beautiful beaches of Sainte-Maxime and the Bay of Saint-Tropez are only about a 45-minute drive away.

Lorgues is not only charming in its own right; it's also an excellent base for exploring the wonderful Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The region is known for its rich culture and natural beauty, and a short distance from Lorgues you'll find several cosy villages such as Entrecasteaux, Tourtour and Flayosc where you can experience authentic Provencal life.
