Fréjus

The ancient Roman city of Fréjus is located midway between Cannes and St-Tropez in the Var department. Fréjus lies on a flat plain that separates the lush Massif des Maures to the west and the red Estérel mountains to the east. It is a very scenic area and a very suitable holiday destination.

Fréjus is the oldest Roman city in Gaul, founded by Julius Caesar in 49 BC and then greatly expanded by Augustus. It is an incredibly exciting city with a wealth of historical memories. These include an amphitheatre, a temple, fragments of an aqueduct, the remains of the Roman port roughly in the centre of the city, columns, fragments of millennia-old walls, the ruins of Roman gates, mosaics and huge stones with inscriptions from Roman times.

The city's main attraction is La Cité Episcopale (the Episcopal City ), which consists of a medieval cathedral from the 10th-12th centuries, a 13th-century convent and a late 4th-century baptistery, thought to be the oldest in France.

The city's latest attraction is the new harbour, Port Fréjus, where a whole new neighbourhood has sprung up with luxury holiday apartments, hotels, restaurants and cafés that look nothing like what you're used to seeing on the Riviera - very interesting. There is room for 10,000 holidaymakers and the harbour can accommodate up to 700 yachts.

Right next to the new harbour area, Plage de Fréjus offers a great beach experience for families and couples alike. The golden sandy beach stretches along the shore and invites you to sunbathe and take a refreshing swim in the clear Mediterranean Sea. Visitors can also participate in various water activities such as paddleboarding, windsurfing and snorkelling. Along the beach are cosy cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy local cuisine and cool drinks while admiring the breathtaking water views.
