![]() Flayosc![]() The small medieval town of Flayosc is beautifully situated on a small hilltop a few kilometres west of Draguignan. We are here in the heart of the beautiful Provencal hinterland, just 40 kilometres from the Mediterranean coast at Fréjus. The area is green and lush with olive groves, vineyards, oak forests and rosemary bushes. The old town of Flayosc is well protected behind its circular wall of houses. At the top is the old Saint-Laurent church with its impressive fortified bell tower, which dates back to the 11th century when it was known as Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Anges. However, the current church was rebuilt in the 16th and 18th centuries. From here, the view is formidable and you can see all the way to the Massif des Maures in the south-west and the red Estérel Massif in the south-east. The village with its narrow, winding stone streets and old pastel-coloured houses is tightly packed around the old church. There are several lovely squares flanked by large shady plane trees, historic fountains and a beautiful old lavoir where the town wives used to wash clothes. Around the old town you can still see the remains of the medieval walls and the city's 3 old gates, Sarrasine, Cresson and Paris. |
