Callian

The small medieval village of Callian is beautifully situated at an altitude of 325 metres in the Var department, midway between Grasse and Draguignan and 30 km from the coastal town of Fréjus. Due to its stunning location in a scenic area on the border between the Massif de l'Estérel and the foothills of the Alps, Callian is an ideal holiday destination.

The city is very distinctive with spiralling streets and an old feudal castle on top. Le château fort with towers from the 12th and 13th centuries has been rebuilt in the 17th century. The castle is now privately owned. There are several old buildings in the town, including an old chapel that is used for art exhibitions and classical concerts. The oldest building in the city, the former parish church, Chapelle Notre Dame des Roses, dates back to the 10th century and is an archaeological site from the Gallo-Roman period. In the very cosy Place de la Bourguignon in front of the church there is a beautiful cascade. Here you can sit and enjoy a drink and listen to the water ripple.

From a vantage point in the town, you can get the most stunning views of the nearby lake, Lac de St Cassien and the two mountain ranges of Estérel and Maures. In the town's cemetery you can also see the grave of Christian Dior (1905-1957). He lived at the Château de la Colle in the neighbouring town of Montauroux.
