Bandol

Bandol is one of the most important seaside resorts on the coast between Marseille and Toulon.

Well sheltered from the mistral by forested mountains, the town has attracted tourists with its beautiful seafront promenade since the beginning of the 20th century. Today, tourists come for the three magnificent beaches, the lively harbour and the great atmosphere.

Bandol is also one of the oldest wine regions in France.

The Romans planted the first vines here 2550 years ago. Today, it's the most important wine region in Provence, producing fantastic, age-worthy red and rosé wines dominated by the Mourvèdre grape. The red wine is firm, powerful with original aromas - herbs, tar, etc. - while the rosé is generally light, salmon-coloured and strong despite its fine aroma. The area is covered with vineyards and the farms are like pearls on a string. Most of the farms offer wine tastings. It's always a great experience to taste the wine at the place where it's bottled, and financially, you can usually save a few dollars by buying them here rather than in the supermarket.

Bandol is beautifully situated in very lush surroundings inside a small bay. The beautiful coastline around Bandol varies between coves, cliffs and small beaches with crystal clear water, making the area perfect for diving and snorkelling. Sanary-sur-Mer is only 5 kilometres away, which, like Bandol, is also a distinct holiday resort and is similarly protected by low forested mountains.

From the harbour in Bandol, boats leave for the small island of Ile de Bendor, owned by Pastis magnate Paul Ricard. Although privately owned, access to the island is free. As well as a luxury hotel, there is a grandiose museum of wine and spirits that includes 8000 bottles from around the world and a collection of glassware. With a good beach and paths lined with mimosa and eucalyptus trees, it is definitely worth a visit.
