![]() Carros![]() With the peaks of the Mercantour National Park as a backdrop, the historic medieval village of Carros is beautifully situated on a hillside at an altitude of 400 metres. The old town offers the most stunning panoramic views of the open countryside of Vars, the Mediterranean Sea and the peaks of the Alps that can be glimpsed in the distance. Carros is characterised by being completely unspoiled by tourists and also very well maintained. It has been recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in the area, and for good reason. Carros has managed to retain its Provencal authenticity with its many flower-filled streets, steep stone stairways, shady squares and old stone houses. Throughout the city, colourful bourgainvillea flowers wind their way up the walls of the old houses. At the top of the old town dominates the city's imposing and very well-maintained medieval castle, ‘Castrum Carossi’ from the 12th century. The castle houses the town's local art museum, the Centre International d'Art Contemporain, which holds several temporary exhibitions throughout the year as well as its own permanent exhibition with more than 1700 objects from the local area. Carros offers several small shops, restaurants and cafés. The town's best restaurant, the renowned ‘La Forge’, is housed in beautiful historic premises with stone walls and beautiful vaulted ceilings. The restaurant also offers a lovely outdoor terrace. The local tourist office offers a lot of brochures about attractions and activities in the area. There are several hiking routes from Carros, including 2 nice routes around the medieval town. |
