Nice: Queen of the RivieraNice is the most important city on the French Mediterranean coast, the Côte d'Azur, known for its beautiful location on the ‘Baie des Anges’, surrounded by hillsides. Nice is in the top 5 of the Danes' favourite travel destinations, and not without reason. Nice offers a wealth of great museums, an interesting old town, many exciting shops, an impressive seafront promenade and a great café and restaurant scene. The international airport,Aéroport Nice Côte d'Azur, is located on the outskirts of the city and there are good train connections. Nice's main attraction is the old town ‘Vielle Ville’ or ‘Vieux Nice’ as it is also known. Here you'll find a maze of narrow, winding streets, densely packed red-tiled roofs, small cosy squares, a wealth of shops and a large selection of good and not so good restaurants. Nice also boasts the most beautiful seafront promenade on the coast, the ‘Promenade des Anglais’. The name comes from the fact that it was English aristocrats who built the grand promenade in the early 1800s. Today, the wide promenade, La Prom, is Nice's landmark, where skaters and rollerbladers, pensioners and tourists walk side by side. ![]() In front of the seafront are the city's many beach sections. Several of these are owned by hotels, where you have to pay an entrance fee and rent sun loungers. On the other hand, there are several places that serve food and drink by the sun loungers, and there is also a restaurant adjacent to the beach. Fortunately, several sections of the beach are free. The most popular is right opposite the casino. From here it is possible to rent jet skis and pedal boats or to go water skiing. Please note that all but one small section of the beach are pebble beaches. So don't forget your bathing shoes. Beyond Vieux Nice and the Promenade des Anglais, there are many more sights to explore. ‘The ‘Musée Marc Chagall’ houses an impressive collection of the artist's works, while the ‘Musée Matisse ’ offers insight into the life and creative process of Henri Matisse. The iconic ‘Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate’ in the old town is worth a visit with its beautiful baroque architecture. For those who love nature, the ‘Colline du Château’ is a must. This park offers magnificent views of the city and the sea as well as access to beautiful gardens and the ruins of the old castle. ‘Cours Saleya’, the market in the old town, is famous for its flower and food stalls, making it a perfect place to sample local delicacies. In addition, theNice Carnival, which takes place every February, provides a colourful and festive experience with parades, floral decorations and live music that attracts visitors from all over the world.
