The most fragrant city in the south of FranceGrasse is located in the beautiful and lush hinterland of Cannes, surrounded by protective mountains. It is one of the area's most visited cities, largely due to the fact that it has been the centre of the world's perfume industry for hundreds of years. Situated high in the mountains, the beautiful and lush Grasse valley enjoys an extremely mild climate, making it ideal for growing lavender, roses and jasmine. Grasse is where 2/3 of France's perfume extracts and perfume essences are produced. As a result, several of the largest factories and manufacturers are located in the city, such as Fragonard, Molinard and Galimard, which can be visited. Of course, the city also houses a perfume museum. In ‘Le Studio des Fragrances ’ at Galimard you can even make your own perfume. You buy a small bottle for the finished perfume, which you name yourself. The recipe is saved and you can order refills from home and matching creams. Grasse also boasts a lovely old town, the ‘Vielle ville’, a medieval centre with narrow streets, staircases, small squares, cosy cafés, galleries and small, interesting shops. The impression of Provencal idyll and way of life dominates on this hillside 20 kilometres north of Cannes. Getting to Grasse is easy. By car is by far the fastest. By train it takes about fifteen minutes from Nice and less than half an hour from Cannes. A very cheap alternative is the bus (Ligne d'Azur 500), where the journey time is somewhat longer as it stops in every hamlet along the way.
